Air India flight New Delhi - San Francisco and return

I recently flew the Air India flight from New Delhi to San Francisco and return on Business class.  This was the first time that I flew Air India for a International Travel and wanted to say that I was extremely happy with the experience

Until now I have flown mostly on Emirates and ofcourse the Emirate A 380 business experience is far superior but Air India is not bad.

The food in Air India is quite good and the seats are comfortable so if you want to fly direct New Delhi - San Francisco,  then Air India flight is a good choice

In New Delhi Indira Gandhi Airport, the Air India lounge ofcourse doesn't compare to the Emirates lounge.  In San Francisco, Air India business class passengers get to use the United lounge which also isn't comparable to the Emirates lounge in San Francisco.

The Emirates inflight entertainment system is also far superior to the Air India

Graham Greene - End of an Affair

Himanshu introduced me to Graham Greene, probably even now one of the finest writers of English, however, when I read Graham Greene in college , I felt I was too young as the plots are incredibly complex and deal with the most complex of all subjects – “human relationships”.

The first Graham Greene novel I read, to briefly summarize the story is that during war time Britain , the protagonist, an author( the novel is told in an autobiographical fashion) is having an affair with a married woman . ( At that time I ofcourse did not know what a relationship is and how yucky the idea sounds, but notwithstanding that) and suddenly the affair ends. The affair ends all of a sudden to the protagonist’s surprise and he feels that probably his paramour is seeing someone else and he hires a detective to shadow her. At some time in the novel, his paramour ( or ex-Girlfriend) becomes sick and eventually dies. Somewhere during her last days, the lady and the gentleman meet in a church and she tells the protagonist the truth that the last day after which she ended the affair, they were together in her ( and her husband’s ) house and just at the time she had left him to go to another room, a bomb hits their house in the bedroom where her lover was and as she rushes to find him, when she just enters the room, at the first sight she finds the damage terrible. Immediately at that time, before moving further,  she makes a pact with god that in case her lover survives she will not meet him again ever. Though luckily for her, her lover is completely unharmed but  then she can’t meet him again and can’t even tell him why.

Sometimes I think what consequences I would be willing to take to make someone happy and however sentimental it sounds I remember the graham greene novel and the sacrifice of that  great lady.

My Super Mom

My Mother was the youngest of three sisters and grew up in an affectionate extended family in West Bengal where everyone wanted to help and support her. Predictably, one day, she had to  leave her father’s home to get married. In March 1967, she married my father, an Air Force Officer who took her to his home in Belgaum, 2000 kms away from Calcutta and she had set up and managed home initially for the two of them. Over the next 13 years as typically of the life an Air Force Officer’s wife she kept moving with her husband from place to place as per the Air Force postings. Along the way she gave birth to two sons and brought them up.
In 1980 my father was posted to New Delhi and it was felt that there was need for some additional income in the family and Delhi also offered opportunities for my mother. My mother took up the challenge and first she undertook nursery training and got a job as a Nursery teacher. She later completed her B.Ed. to get a job as a fulltime teacher in Air Force Bal Bharti School. It was truly an accomplishment for her to undertake studies at the age of 40 and start working at this late age, having never worked at all. As typical of all working moms, she would wake up early, prepare food for all of us and then board her bus to take her to school.
In September 2010, very suddenly my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and succumbed to a botched up operation within 2 months. While I was with my father during his operation and later during the funeral and mourning, but I had to get back to my new job, which I had just joined a month back. Despite the fact that I couldn’t do help much initially, my mother handled all the tasks that enabled her to live by herself after the loss of her husband.

As mentioned initially, being the youngest sister, my mother’s parents and her elder sisters always looked upon her as a little girl who needed to be helped, but by looking after herself in various circumstances of life, she has proved herself to be a true heroine.
